Funding Sources
These are the primary organizations who provide financial support for prosthetic treatment (click on the name to go to the organization's website):
Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL)
- Patient must have a prescription from a physician for orthotic treatment.
- Patients are eligible for a new orthosis every two years at the discretion of the healthcare professionals. (Knee orthoses are replaced every four years)
- Generally foot orthotics are not covered. AISH has special requirements prior to approving custom foot orthotics
Alberta Residents with valid AB Healthcare under the age of 65:
- AADL will cover 75% of the cost of the orthosis
- The patient portion is 25% to a maximum of $500/year
Alberta Residents with valid AB Healthcare over the age of 65:
- AADL will cover 100% of the cost of the orthosis
Alberta Residents with valid AB Healthcare who are on a form of assisted living:
- AADL will cover 100% of the cost of the orthosis
Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB)
- Patient must have a prescription from a physician for orthotic treatment.
- The Orthotist must fill out the appropriate paperwork for pre-approval (in writing) from the WCB Case Manager for orthotic treatment.
- With pre-approval, orthotic treatment is covered 100%.
Non-Insured Health Benefits for First Nations and Inuit (NIHB)
- Patient must have a prescription from a physician for orthotic treatment.
- The Orthotist must fill out the appropriate paperwork for pre-approval (in writing) for orthotic treatment.
- With pre-approval, orthotic treatment is covered 100%.
Department of Veterans Affairs Canada (DVA)
- Patient must have a prescription from a physician for orthotic treatment.
- The Orthotist must fill out the appropriate paperwork for pre-approval (in writing) for orthotic treatment.
- With pre-approval, orthotic treatment is covered 100%.
Private Health Insurance
- Patient must have a prescription from a physician for orthotic treatment.
- The Orthotist may have to provide an estimate or a justification letter.
- Patients are required to pay up front and apply for reimbursement from the insurance company.
